Intake 2022/10 - Sem 1

Physical Pharmacy BPH 1106

Students will be introduced to principles of physical pharmacy required in the formulations of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Emphasis will be placed on methods to determine the physicochemical properties of pharmaceutical materials. This will help students in rational decision-making on the most appropriate physicochemical properties to be taken into account prior to preformulation studies, which in turn provide further development of stable dosage forms.

BPH2205 Biochemistry (Core)

Course learning outcomes:

  1. Describe the various biomolecules in body and their structural properties and physiological significance in health and other clinical applications.
  2. Describe the characteristics of enzymes, coenzymes, vitamins, minerals and hormones and their role in regulation of metabolism.
  3. Describe the process of digestion, absorption and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins and their integration in stages of fasting, feeding and exercise regulated by enzymes, coenzymes and hormones and the metabolism of heme and associated diseases.
  4. Describe the structure of DNA, RNA, cell cycle, processes of replication, transcription and translation of genetic code and the metabolism of nucleotides and the associated disorders.

BPH2104 Microbiology

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

 1. Describe the general characteristics, structure and classification of microorganisms with reference to pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

2. Describe the morphology, virulence factors and pathogenesis of bacterial and viral infections.

3. Describe the morphology and life cycle of human parasites; and the morphology of pathogenic fungi.

4. Demonstrate practical knowledge of laboratory technique in the diagnosis of microbial infections.

5. Explain the principles of infectious disease epidemiology and methods of infection control.

BPH2105 Immunology

  1. Classify immunity and describe the structure and function of the immune system.

  2. Explain the role of immune response as a defense mechanism of the body.

  3. Discuss the role of immunity in tissue injury (autoimmunity & hypersensitivity) and immunological basis of immunodeficiency disorders.

  4. List the various immunotechniques and their application in infectious, autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases as well as in the preparation of vaccines and development of diagnostic kits
