BSN 2033 Language, Literacy & Communication in Special Needs Education/ BSE 2143 Language and Literacy for Special Needs Education

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the importance and foundation of language, literacy, and communication in special needs education. Students will learn to identify needs, develop programming to meet the needs of the students through the use of assessments and lessons, and design tools and strategies to assist those with language, literacy, and communication needs within the learning environment. 

BSN 1103 Visual Arts & Music in Special Needs Education/ BSE 2203 Music in the Classroom

This course examines the use of visual arts and music within the classroom to enhance the learning of learners with special needs. Students will develop an understanding of the various ways to use 'voice' and learn to differentiate the use of musical components, including instruments, within their activities. In this course, students will  learn to use visual arts  and music to build self-confidence in learners with special needs and develop listening skills and an ability to work from part-to-whole. 

BSN 2053 Social Skills & Moral Development

This course teaches the principles and developmentally appropriate teachings of social skills and moral skills development for children and how to incorporate the teachings within the curriculum.

BSN1044 Teaching Methods and Pedagogy in Special Needs Education/ BSE1053 Teaching Method and Pedagogy

The aim is to develop a good understanding of the various teaching methods and pedagogies related to special education, how to utilize them to create strong classroom management plans, and how to prepare effective lessons that engage students while practicing the pedagogies learned.  In the micro-teaching studio, students will be able to implement appropriate strategies and learning materials in simulated learning situations.

This course is an introduction to teaching methods. Teaching methods are often divided into two broad categories: teacher-centered methods (also called direct instruction) and learner-centered methods (also called indirect instruction or inquiry-based learning). An effective teacher knows several methods, some teacher-directed and others learner-directed. From among these methods, a teacher selects the one method or combination of methods most likely to achieve a particular lesson’s objectives with a particular group of students. So this course will explain meaning and characteristics of teaching effectiveness.

BSN 3083 Therapies for Special Needs

This course will give students an understanding of the various therapies available for students with special needs, how to implement the support strategies into daily classroom learning, and how to create activities to aid in the therapeutic growth of the students with special needs.
